A favor for a Friend

So my buddy Jozias asked for me to design a tattoo for him, which to me is daunting because whenever I look back at things I've made I ALWAYS cringe, and seeing as he and I are pretty good friends and coworkers that means I will eventually look at his tattoo and cringe...but I agreed to do it cause he's a good buddy and he said he'd be honored and I just couldn't say no. Sooooooo, the first one was my first pass at it that I did at lunch in photoshop. The second is one I did in gouache, cause I couldn't find my Wacom pen, at home. It was based on the photo bellow it that Jozias then sent to me and asked me to add my flare to it, which to me meant that I should change the squid, cause the Whale was already AMAZING! Anyways, he likes it and this is what he's getting done on his forearm, just as soon as I take it into photoshop and add the final touches.... so weird that something I made will permanently be on someones body.

Paul Felix Study

So a lot of my friends do masters studies to boost their knowledge. Today I got a call from my girlfriend at work and decided at that time to stop what I was doing and try out my hand at some Paul Felix designs and really see what he did in the painting I was at that moment GUSHING over. Theses did't take long, as I dont feel comfortable being on the phone very long at work, but I actually learned a lot about the three demensionality of more stylized characters. So in the end it ended up being a really useful study.

I took a little break after work and did a quick painting, and by quick it was about 2 hours. I havnt really had much opportunity to paint landscape heavy paintings so I thought I'd give it a try. I really enjoyed the push and pull of figuring out the atmospheric perspective and such. I'll definitely be doing more of these.

Its been a while, so today I sat down and busted out a medium I honestly never use. Watercolor. Most of these are based on people I saw on the street today, with the exception of Little Red riding hood and the snooty man in a suit. I think they turned out pretty good. These were don't on little trading card bristol paper that was given to me at A.P.E. so they are really small. about 2x3

At church a few weeks back we were studying the temptation of Christ. Yeah I do imagine the devil wearing heels! Power Puff Girls did it too. He does seem the type, doesn't he? Anyways this is typically how I go about taking notes at church. If I don't doodle I can't focus, on top of which I think it's a fun conflict to think about. Satan: snarky, aloof, and bitter (but blasé about it).

I'm definitely going through ebbs and flows when it comes to working on my film. While I do have it boarded I feel as though I need to ultra clarify things for myself for when I go to actually animate and put it all together. So, I have been doing these "Cleaned up story boards." It might seem like a waste of time but it is definitely helping me solidify the style and showing me what to expect when I'm actually animating.

So I've been working on my short film again getting some visual development work done on it and I think I've nailed down my character. This is a very polished version of what he'll look like, but his design is definitely in the right direction (there's no way I could animate in 2-d something this detailed). So I will be doing a more 2-d version of him, but I like where its going. More to come soon!

I was listening to This American Life today and there was a story that pulled at some heart strings. They spoke of a photo that was taken that had been the last time the woman and the chimp (Lucy) had seen each other. The story didnt have a happy ending, but it wasnt a bad ending, just sad. Anyways I wanted to see this photo and then I wanted to draw it.

So yesterday I went sketching with my buddy Mike Walters at Borders. While in borders I was looking for a photo book that didnt have people posing. I found two. The first was a series of Robert Doisneau photos which I passed on because was covered in plastic wrap and I didnt want to be "that guy" who removes the wrappers from books at the store. The second was a series of pulitzer winning photographs... it was the most difficult book to flip through casually as the majority of the shots were dealing with serious world events including but not limited to famine, military coups, terrorist attacks, torture, and natural disasters. Not what I had intended on seeing. So in the spirit of the happy side of life I decided to warm up at work with a nice Doisneau reference.

So I'm working on a personal project of which I'm in the preproduction side of things...well its all preproduction work, but I'm developing a style for it at present as well as some characters and this is a sample of where its headed. Kinda excited!

So in order to focus at church on sundays I usually need to preoccupy myself with something else, kinda useful that I draw. Were currently in a series about the miracles of Jesus and so I find myself drawing the stories. This one is about the man who was told to "pick up your mat and walk" and he did, after 40 years of waiting at this mystical pool that could heal whoever got in first when the water was stirred.
with everything going on in my "home" country of Chile I drew a Mapuche, native chilean. I really want to do something one day about Chile and I keep coming back to the indigenous people.
So while I cant tell you all what these are for I got the okay to post them. So here they be. Yes I am aware that the fish looks just like nemo, but thats kinda the direction they were going. Also I'd like to see anyone else do a semi-realistic clownfish without it looking like nemo, especially when you're asked to keep it very "Pixar" also I didnt reference the movie.

Ok so for class I had to pick a story and create shots and characters and designs for it! Like a "REAL" production. As you can see I went with a story called "The Fisherman and His Soul." Written by Oscar Wilde, who is awesome by the way. So here's a bit of what I've done so far, please understand that not everything is here or finished yet, but I was needing to post so...thats what I'm doing.

Ok, Well its been a while since I put anything new up. I I'll start with a smaller post and then move onto the BIG post. These are just a few of the things that made the cut this time due to either their quirkiness or their current potential for later work. Mostly the expressive self portraits in brush pen are the future project stuff. The rest are a bit of what I still liked looking at and what made me laugh. The Hipsters are an attempt to stylize like Ed Juan, cause I think his characters are SO GREAT! Also he's super nice and said I could, so HA! (Not sure who that was directed at)

So I was asked to do a three quarters of "One" and to make an adjustment or two and I think I love it! Much more likable and I think the simplicity of the costume will help to separate him from the layouts. We'll see!
